Cologne Cathedral

Today we visited the Cologne Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in Europe.

“Construction of Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 but was halted in the years around 1560, unfinished. Attempts to complete the construction began around 1814 but the project was not properly funded until the 1840s. The edifice was completed to its original medieval plan in 1880.”

It certainly is enormous. The people in the foreground give an idea of the scale of the building. I have trouble conceiving how people in around 1500 were able to build such a large structure without modern tools and equipment.

There were massive amounts of stained-glass windows.

I counted at least three pipe organs.
